Visitor numbers still falling in Spain

Post by Ian »

Figures for tourist arrivals in Spain are down 16% to March 2009 compared to 2008. Around 8.9 million foreign tourists arrived over the last quarter, down 16.3% on 2008 according to the data from the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.

The Ministry reminded the press that this year Easter fell in April, where it was in March last year and so therefore comparisons were not accurate.

This year most tourists came to Spain from the U.K., down 23.3% to 2.08 million, followed by the Germans, down 15.7% at 1.5 million and the French, down 9.8% at 1.1 million.

Most popular destination was the Canaries with 2.3 million tourists, followed by Cataluña with 2.1 million tourists and Andalucia with 1.1 million tourists.

68% of the arrivals this year came without a package deal, as independent travellers.
